Direct Bonding for a Better Smile

Direct bonding is a relatively new procedure used by dentists to repair chips and cracks in the teeth, fill cavities and close wide gaps between teeth. Procedures that require the use of dental bonding can usually be completed in one visit to the dentist’s office. It is a minimally invasive procedure which can be used alone or in conjunction with other dental treatments to improve the patient’s smile and overall dental health.

How Direct Bonding Works

Before a dentist begins the direct bonding procedure, he or she will place a separator between the teeth to prevent saliva from building up and creating too much moisture in the area to work with effectively. Depending on the scope of the procedure and the preferences of the patient, the dentist may give the patient an anesthetic injection to ease pain and encourage relaxation.

An acid solution will be applied to the affected tooth so the bonding agent will adhere to the tooth as intended. The acid solution will be left on for approximately 15 minutes, at which point the dentist will apply the bonding agent to the affected tooth and prepare for the next phase of the dental procedure.

If the patient is having a cavity filled, the dentist will shape a resin that is similar in size and shape to putty and apply it to the tooth which needs filling. He or she will then apply intense heat to the tooth which allows the resin to dry and for the filling to form its permanent shape. Before releasing the patient, the dentist will insure that the filling is properly secured in place to prevent the patient from experiencing tooth pain or for the filling to become loose.

For dental restoration services like the repair of chips and cracks in the teeth, the dentist will first apply adhesive to the restoration unit and then place it on the patient’s tooth. Similar to when a cavity is filled, the dentist will then expose the tooth to intense heat until the tooth and restorative unit have completely bonded.
