Porcelain VeneersAn Overview
With aging, the enamel on our teeth becomes worn, dulled and discolored. With porcelain veneers, you can take years off your face and have the smile you’ve always dreamed of.
“Case planning is critical for porcelain veneers. The procedure isn’t just about covering up the teeth, but creating a natural beauty that feels comfortable and functions properly.” – Dr. Andrew Cobb.
Choosing an experienced cosmetic dentist is important when having porcelain veneers placed on the teeth to ensure optimal esthetics and long-term wear. Dr. Cobb takes a very conservative approach to porcelain veneers, retaining as much of the natural tooth structure as possible.
What sets Dr. Cobb apart from other dentists in Washington, D.C., and Maryland is that he believes in the concept of complete dentistry as taught by Dr. Peter Dawson, founder of The Dawson Academy.
Dr. Cobb is a senior faculty member at The Dawson Academy, a post-graduate educational and clinical research facility dedicated to the advancement of modern dentistry. He teaches the principles that the key to dental success is through proper diagnosis, comprehensive treatment planning, practice efficiency, and superior patient care.
Dr. Cobb and his staff give each patient individualized care and attention to make the right diagnosis up front and recommend the best treatment options for optimal health, function, and aesthetics.

Porcelain Veneers What to Expect
Porcelain Veneers: Smile Design Process
Dr. Cobb takes a comprehensive approach to all of his patients including those who have decided to have porcelain veneers. The smile design process takes place in four steps:
- Comprehensive Evaluation – The first step in the smile design process for porcelain veneers is a comprehensive evaluation and examination. Dr. Cobb will inspect the teeth, gums, mouth, jaw joints and muscles. This allows Dr. Cobb to identify the fundamental reasons for any damage to the teeth that have resulted in the need for porcelain veneers. Identifying the root cause will help him to address the problem and prevent future damage to the porcelain veneers.
- Digital Imaging and Models – The next step is for Dr. Cobb to apply the treatment to 2-D and 3-D models. This step in the case planning allows Dr. Cobb to test the proposed treatment without making any changes to your teeth. This also gives you a chance to see what your “new smile” will look like after the porcelain veneers procedure is complete.
- Preparation and Provisional Teeth Veneers – Once the porcelain veneers treatment is approved, Dr. Cobb will make adjustments to your teeth to accommodate the porcelain veneers. A tiny amount of natural tooth structure must be removed from the tooth or teeth to allow for the proper fit and placement of the permanent porcelain veneers. Dr. Cobb will take impressions of the teeth to be used by the dental laboratory making the final porcelain veneers. While your porcelain veneers are being crafted, Dr. Cobb will fit you with a pair of provisional or temporary teeth veneers to protect your teeth and allow proper function. Provisional teeth veneers are typically made of resin and may be worn for up to 3 weeks while the permanent restorations are being fabricated.
- Final Placement of Porcelain Veneers – The last step in the process is the final placement of the porcelain veneers. Dr. Cobb will place the porcelain veneers on your teeth and check them for fit and comfort. Once both you and the dentist are satisfied, they will be permanently bonded to the teeth and gently polished.
