Diagnosing and Treating TMJ
There is no one size fits all solution for any dental problem, particularly in regards to TMJ disorders. Each problem is unique to the individual patient and treatment planning is entirely dependent on the diagnosis. Dr. Cobb has extensive experience working with TMJ patients. This experience gives him a library of cases to reference and compare to when creating a treatment plan. Each relationship Dr. Cobb forms with a patient begins with a comprehensive evaluation. Aided by state-of-the-art technology, Dr. Cobb is able to diagnose a patient to treat the source of the pain and dysfunction rather than simply the symptoms.
Taking a Conservative Approach
When treating patients with TMJ, it is Dr. Cobb’s belief that “less is best.” Finding the source of the problem and making the necessary corrections, avoiding major procedures and surgery whenever possible. Therapies for TMJ may include:
- Lifestyle changes
- Splints / Occlusal Devices
- Changes to the occlusion (bite) to correct problems or malalignment
Featured Technology: TScan
Patients who have been suffering for years with TMJ symptoms often have an imbalance in their bite. Many patients have visited several doctors and dentists in an attempt to relieve their pain. Dr. Cobb has invested in technology and diagnostic tools to get an accurate diagnosis of a patient’s condition. One tool he uses to aid in the diagnosis of TMJ is the TScan.
TScan is a computerized occlusal (bite) analysis system that allows Dr. Cobb to quickly and accurately determine how balanced a patient’s bite is. The improper function and imbalance of the teeth coming together can cause pain, fractures, nighttime teeth grinding, increased headaches, neck pain, tooth-wear, and so much more. The TScan shows what traditional X-rays or occlusal paper cannot – the force and alignment of a patient’s bite in real time.
